Fans of the beloved book series held out hope for Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series after the disappointment that was the movies in the early 2010s. According to book fans, while the two movies, starring Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson, had a few good parts, for the most part, it was a poor adaptation of the book that so many love. When author Rick Riordan announced that Disney+ had signed on to create a series, with each season covering a book from the five-book series, fans were cautious yet optimistic, especially since Riordan himself would be heavily involved in the production.

Throughout the production, Riordan shared updates that gave fans even more hope that this series would be true to the book and that any changes made were made with the consent of the author. Because of this, when the series premiered a day early on December 19, 2023, fans from around the globe tuned in to watch and made this premiere one of the biggest of Disney+’s year. In fact, it was so successful that it surpassed the season premieres of Marvel’s Loki and Secret Invasion

According to Nielsen streaming ratings, Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ two-episode premiere “amassed 572 million minutes of watch time with a combined run time of 80 minutes”. This means that there were around 7.15 million complete runs (views) in just the U.S. Each episode “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” and “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom” come in at 39 and 44 minutes respectively. In the first six days, the series got “13.3 million views worldwide, which is around 505 million minutes”.

These are much bigger numbers than Secret Invasion whose premiere was streamed for 461 million minutes and the second season of Loki which was 446 million minutes in total viewing time. Secret Invasion was met with a mixed reception by fans and the second season of Loki was also down in views as compared to the first, which led to these lower numbers.

In a press release by Disney, Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now “the top Disney Branded Television premiere of all time”. It is in the top five season premieres of 2023. This bodes well for future seasons of the show, which means we may actually get a full-screen adaptation of the five-book series this time around.
