On a press tour for Wake Up Dead Man, the final film in the Knives Out trilogy, director Rian Johnson teased a new project. He said, “The most exciting thing right now is this idea I have in my head for the next thing I’m gonna make, and I think ultimately, that’s all you can do, is just kind of follow your nose.” Johnson continued, “If I had to define genre-wise, I’d say it harkens back to the ‘70s paranoid thrillers. It’s got a light sci-fi element to it.” As far as sci-fi, Johnson went full-in on the genre with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. However, it seems that his Star Wars experience is firmly in the past, at least for now. The director confirmed, “That cog will be turning for the rest of my life. I love Star Wars. And if some day it makes sense to come back to it, for both of us, it will be the most wonderful thing in the world.”

New boost

Johnson’s series of mysteries in the Knives Out franchise and the show Poker Face have already proven his mettle in the genre. He said he’s grateful for his partnership with Netflix but is still drawn to theatrical releases. Johnson explained, “being with Netflix has absolutely just put [Knives Out] culturally in a place that I never thought it would get to, which is very, very cool. At the same time, I've said that the theatrical experience is very, very important to me. It's something I really believe in, and I feel like the reports of its death are greatly exaggerated.” No more details about the new project have been released.
