The numbers are in for contemplation. The New York-based research company Antenna has sifted through record data from its partner companies, revealing an interesting trend for Disney+ and Hulu. Both streaming platforms saw a recent increase in cancellations, but they also had an influx of new subscriptions. The fact that these numbers are blanket figures, not differentiating why individuals may have canceled their accounts, is important to keep in mind while examining Antenna’s data; some may have canceled their plan and switched to a different tier, or they may have canceled altogether.

New boost

Disney+ experienced an 8% cancellation rate in its U.S. market, and Hulu reported a 10% cancellation rate for September, as reported by Variety.  This is twice the normal rate. The cancellation increase could be for two reasons. Disney revealed a price hike coming to Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, as well as the bundles, at a slightly higher rate compared to a similar price increase in October 2024. Announced at the end of September 2025, the changes are reflected across billing statements as of October 21, 2025.  His news came at a time when subscription holders were already rethinking their memberships. When Disney pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show from the air following threats from the FCC, many questioned what free speech truly meant and considered canceling their subscriptions over the situation. Kimmel’s show has been restored, but the impact was felt.

While there was a notable number of cancellations, there was also an increase in new subscriptions for both Disney+ and Hulu. Disney+ had an increase of 2.18 million subscribers, and Hulu pulled in 2.11 million subscribers. While the exact figures are unavailable at this time, the increase in subscriptions helped offset the impact of the increased subscription cancellations.

New boost

There is still a fair bit of time left in Disney’s fourth financial quarter for the fiscal year of 2025. The company aims for a 10 million-subscriber increase across Hulu and Disney+, expecting the bulk to come from Hulu.  Disney CEO Bob Iger has high hopes for the direction of the numbers, stating, “We are pleased with our creative success and financial performance in Q3 as we continue to execute across our strategic priorities…With ambitious plans ahead for all our businesses, we’re not done building, and we are excited for Disney’s future.”
