A dispute has erupted between a British Trade Union, The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), and Rockstar Games. Rockstar Games, the creator of the hit Grand Theft Auto videogame franchise, is being accused of union busting over what they believe is the unlawful and retaliatory firing of 30-40 staffers across multiple company offices in the UK and Canada by Rockstar Games last Thursday. All the employees were part of a private trade union group chat on Discord and were either union members or attempting to organize at the company, leading to suspicions by IWGB of unlawful and retaliatory firings due to their organizing.

“Rockstar has just carried out one of the most blatant and ruthless acts of union busting in the history of the games industry,” Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB, said in a statement. “This flagrant contempt for the law and for the lives of the workers who bring in their billions is an insult to their fans and the global industry.”

However, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the parent company of Rockstar Games, is strongly disputing IWGB’s claims, stating, without further clarification, that the employees were actually fired for “gross misconduct, and for no other reason.” IWGB has disputed Rockstar Games’ claims of gross misconduct by the fired employees and has vowed to “pursue every legal claim possible to ensure our members are reinstated and receive interim relief.” IWGB also noted that the employees fired include persons with Rockstar Games-sponsored work visas and others with health conditions who will lose access to essential workplace healthcare schemes.
