While Black Widow has been integral to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the most recent film Thunderbolts*, Scarlett Johansson is ready to step away from the MCU, or at least the acting dimension of it. Her name was listed as an executive producer, but she asked her credit to be removed as she wasn’t involved with the film. In an interview with her Black Widow co-star David Harbour (Red Guardian), he joked, “You hated the film that much.” Johansson quipped back, “No, you’re just wanting that to be the case.” Johansson assured Harbour she was proud of the actors in the film.

The reasons for stepping away go beyond superhero fatigue. Under a contract, an actor is essentially relinquishing ownership of their image until said contract ends. Things like painting nails or getting a haircut are off-limits. Johansson explained, “These sound like silly problems, but your identity is wrapped up in this job for a long time, and if you’re not doing engaging work as an actor, you feel a little cagey sometimes.” Despite distancing herself from Thunderbolts*, she remains open to returning to the MCU to direct future projects.

Johansson recalled her producer role in Black Widow, “Even producing Black Widow and being a part of the production of that, and the development of the story, and the story between Natasha and Yelena,” she explained. “[There is], I think, a way of doing it, a way of maintaining the integrity of the idea of human connection, family, disappointment, all of the things that were themes in [Eleanor the Great], and doing it in a giant way in a giant universe — there's ways of doing that… So, yeah, definitely, it could be, it would be fun.” Thunderbolts* is in theaters now.
