Artificial intelligence is the new craze sweeping the nation, but it’s not without its downsides. Scarlett Johansson, known for playing Natasha Romanoff in the MCU, is suing an AI company for using her name and likeness in an ad. The app Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar created an ad for itself starting with footage of Johansson behind the scenes for Black Widow. In the video, Johansson says, “What’s up guys? It’s Scarlett and I want you to come with me.”

At this point in the ad, a graphic covers the actress’ mouth and the scene switches to an AI likeness of Johansson. A voice imitating Johansson says, “It’s not limited to avatars only. You can also create images with texts and even your AI videos. I think you shouldn’t miss it.” A disclaimer written in fine print explains that Lisa AI has nothing to do with Johansson.

Johansson is suing the company for using her name and likeness without her permission. Her attorney Kevin Yorn stated, “We do not take these things lightly. Per our usual course of action in these circumstances, we will deal with it with all legal remedies that we will have.” The video has since been removed from the internet although the apps that created it remain accessible on Android and iOS phones.

Johansson is not the only actor to find herself advertising a project without her permission. Tom Hanks was surprised to find himself advertising a dental plan. The potential of abusing this technology is a large part of the continuing SAG-AFTRA strike. The current technology can make almost anyone say anything without their express consent. Those in the public eye, like actors and politicians, face a unique danger with the rise of AI.
