Sora, AI Text To Video App, Shutdown After Disney Investment

In December, Disney unveiled a deal with OpenAI to allow people to use their characters in the AI text-to-video app Sora. However, that deal is now dead, owing to the app’s closure by OpenAI. While no money changed hands as the deal was still being finalised, it seems OpenAI will still have access to licence 250 Disney characters for whatever venture they next pursue.
On social media, OpenAI shared of Sora’s closure, “We’re saying goodbye to Sora. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”
A Disney spokesperson said of the news, “As the nascent AI field advances rapidly, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere. We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators.”
The Disney deal with Sora would have been for three years, with Disney CEO Bob Iger and other top Disney executives saying in February’s earnings call that it would have gone live this spring. With Sora closing, Disney’s plans to integrate will have to change course.
