It seems that fans will have to wait a bit longer for the next Stargate TV series. According to Variety, Amazon has decided not to move forward with an untitled new Stargate series that was set to be helmed by Martin Gero.
After Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to the franchise in 2022, the studio reportedly expressed interest in developing new Stargate projects, and in November 2025, the new series was officially announced. Gero, who previously worked as a writer on the television series Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, was set to serve as writer, producer, and showrunner for the project.
No official reason was given for cancelling the series, a decision that reportedly came after pre-production had already begun. However, Amazon executives are said to have been concerned that Gero’s vision for the show would not be sufficient to attract viewers beyond the franchise’s dedicated fanbase. This is despite Gero stating that the new project would be aimed at “…those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those who are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”

In addition, a leadership change and organisational restructuring at Amazon MGM may have influenced the decision to cancel the series. Nick Pepper, formerly Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series, and Matt King, formerly Head of Tentpole, Genre and Universe Development, both of whom were strong supporters of the project and had worked closely with Gero, left the company in recent months.
Gero, who had previously created Blindspot, starring Jamie Alexander, remains under contract with Amazon MGM and will now explore other projects, while the studio has stated that it remains committed to further expanding the Stargate franchise.
The Stargate franchise began with a feature film directed by Roland Emmerich in 1994, starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. From 1997 to 2007, Stargate SG-1, starring Richard Dean Anderson, ran for ten seasons, first on Showtime and later on Sci Fi. Between 2004 and 2009, Stargate Atlantis aired for five seasons, also on Sci Fi, followed by Stargate Universe, which ran from 2009 to 2011 on Syfy. In addition, the franchise includes two direct-to-video films, an animated series, a web series, and several video games, novels, and comic books.
