One of the cosmos’ most iconic duos is making its way to the big screen! Entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider, as well as The Hollywood Reporter, has revealed that a film adaptation of Rick and Morty is in the early stages of development.
Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty premiered on Adult Swim back in 2013. Since then, it has received critical acclaim, high ratings, and has become a worldwide phenomenon with a very devoted fanbase. The series centers on scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty and their many adventures across time and space. Over the course of its run, Rick and Morty has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program, spawned three spin-off shows (Vindicators 2, Rick and Morty: The Anime, and the upcoming President Curtis), and an endless stream of merchandise and video game appearances. In 2024, the series was renewed through season 12, with its 9th set to conclude on July 26th. Since its debut, Rick and Morty has frequently been cited by critics and industry figures as one of the greatest animated series of all time.
Fans have been clamoring for a Rick and Morty movie since its inception, with many believing the series should receive the big screen treatment in the same vein as The Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants. Word on a movie first came about in 2019 when co-creator Justin Roiland (who was also the original voice of Rick and Morty) expressed interest in an R-Rated feature film. In 2021, producer Scott Marder stated the cast and crew had ambitions to make a feature film, while Roiland said it was a matter of “if not when” regarding its development. Just this week, co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed a Rick and Morty movie was in active (albeit early) development and series veteran Jacob Hair was in talks to direct. Justin Roiland will likely not be involved due to his ousting from Adult Swim following domestic violence allegations in 2023. The titular time-traveling duo has been voiced by Ian Cardon and Henry Belden since season 7. As of right now, whether or not Dan Harmon will be involved in a creative capacity is unknown.
