Tom Holland is back in the Spidey suit in the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer. The official synopsis reads, “Following Dr. Stephen Strange’s spell at the end of the film Spider-Man: No Way Home, the world has forgotten that Peter Parker exists. Four years later, Parker anonymously protects New York City as the hero Spider-Man. While investigating a series of crimes, he uncovers a larger mystery and faces the consequences of his past.” No Way Home returned Peter’s secret identity, but it also took his past, making him a ghost of sorts. The trailer shows Peter dealing with that fallout.

The trailer opens with Peter watching Ned and MJ celebrating their first day at MIT. He then swings through the city and pens a letter, presumably to M.J. The letter sums up the details of the last film, but it is unclear whether he intends to ever share the letter with M.J. Throughout the trailer, audiences see multiple glimpses of The Punisher. The Scorpion makes an appearance as well. Outside of the world forgetting him, Peter is also struggling with some mutations of his powers, which is shown by him starting to cocoon. He turns to Dr. Banner for help. A voiceover explains that spiders have three life cycles. However, spiders are vulnerable during the transitions between cycles. The voiceover concludes that spiders who survive these cycles have a rebirth. As epic as the heroics are, Tom Holland shows that Peter Parker is still socially awkward. He attends a housewarming, or apartment-warming party at M.J.’s, and is apparently her neighbor. Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31.
