Warner Bros. has announced that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will hit theaters just in time for Christmas in 2027. A holiday-time release track for this franchise, as Peter Jackson’s films premiered similarly, with each trilogy (The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit) bringing in $2.9 billion at the box office. Naturally, Andy Serkis will reprise the titular role, but wait, precious – there’s more! In addition to lending his voice to this fan-favorite character and motion-capturing to bring him to life, Serkis will direct this first film as well!
The Hunt for Gollum will be produced by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. Boyens recently explained to Empire magazine that “The Hunt for Gollum” is “quite an intense story” that “falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria. It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is expected to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
