Following the success of the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Paramount, and Nickelodeon confirmed that a sequel is in the works, and new details that emerged recently may point to this sequel going in a new direction compared to its predecessor in terms of one of the franchise’s greatest villains: Shredder.

In a recent Collider interview with Jeff Rowe, writer and director of Mutant Mayhem, he discussed some of the challenges that come with the film’s sequel, and reimagining the Shredder for an adaptation that’s already brought a different kind of storytelling to the franchise.

During the interview, Rowe states:

“That is exactly what I am trying to figure out and what my next meeting will be about. That is what we are in the thick of now. Shredder is just a great character. He’s an iconic, classic, loved character. He’s like the Joker. You know who he is, even if you’re not a fan of the source material. I think we definitely wanna do a villain-forward film. We’re currently trying to make decisions about that, but those decisions for us as filmmakers are always going to come from the place of what tells the best story, specifically about our main characters, the Turtles.”

It’s clear that Shredder will have a very heavy presence in the next TMNT film, and that this interpretation of the character may be unlike anything we’ve seen before.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is available to stream on Paramount+
