During the latest Nintendo Direct, a segment announcing projects related to Super Mario’s 40th anniversary got it started. A teaser for the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the first trailer of those announcements, revealing the title to be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

If that name rings a bell, it is because it references the 2008 Wii game Super Mario Galaxy. A game that Nintendo has also announced will be coming in a double pack with its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Releasing on October 2, the digital versions of these games can be bought together or separately.

For The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it was confirmed by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri that Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson would return for this sequel. No new cast members were revealed, though it was stated that the movie is considered the main event of the Mario 40th anniversary celebrations. So, while the Galaxy games are the main influence for this sequel, Illumination is likely still pulling from the history of the Super Mario franchise for it.

Releasing in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive success for Nintendo’s first venture into the theatrical space since the 90s and a certain other Super Mario Movie. Earning $1.36 billion at the box office, it became the most successful video game adaptation of all time. The sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, will release on April 3, 2026.
