The 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie was, to put it lightly, a massive success. With an all star cast, fantastic score, charming animation, endless references to the games, and fun plot, the movie broke box office records around the world, ultimately bringing in almost 1.4 billion dollars against a 100 million dollar budget. This is obviously a success by any measure.

While the film wasn’t a huge hit with critics, with a 59% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, but a score of 95% from the audience. With success on that level, more films were inevitable.
