As layoffs hit X-Box company Rare, the company canceled the upcoming action-adventure game Everwild and the first-person shooter Perfect Dark. Matt Booty of Microsoft Studios indicated that several unaccounted projects would cease development. He explained, “As part of this, we are closing one of our studios, The Initiative. These decisions, along with other changes across our teams, reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape. We did not make these choices lightly, as each project and team represents years of effort, imagination, and commitment.”

In other changes, longtime game designer Gregg Mayles will depart the company after 35 years of service. Another longtime employee, Executive Producer Louise O’ Connor, is departing the company. She got her start with the N64 classic Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Everwild’s development lasted over a decade. The game was initially announced in November 2019 with a trailer released in July the following year. This past February, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer confirmed that progress was being made on the game, so the cancellation comes as a shock. Microsoft confirmed that the layoffs will affect under 4% of their global workforce which translates to approximately 9,000 people.
