The Who

So, last month, Zak Starkey, the son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and drummer for The Who since 1996, was fired over overplaying complaints but rehired after the misunderstanding. Then, the group announced that their upcoming tour would be their last, and it was assumed that Starkey would be joining the group as they soared into the sunset. However, this is not the case, as Pete Townshend recently posted on Instagram that the drummer would be leaving the group, stating:

“After many years of great work on drums from Zak the time has come for a change. A poignant time. Zak has lots of new projects in hand and I wish him the best. Scott Devours who has worked with Roger [Daltrey]’s solo band will join The Who for our Final shows. Please welcome him.”

Townshend implies in his statement that Zak left the group willingly to pursue his own projects. Scoot Devours, a drummer who has played with lead singer Roger Daltrey’s solo band, will be replacing Zak for these final shows. Zak, however, has released a statement on Instagram, saying:

“I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endeavors. this would be a lie. I love the who and would never had quit. So I didn’t make the statement … quitting the who would also have let down the countless amazing people who stood up for me (thank you all a million times over and more) thru the weeks of mayhem of me going ‘in an out an in an out an in an out like a bleedin squeezebox x”

The Who clapped back with their own formal statement:

"The Who are heading for retirement, whereas Zak is 20 years younger and has a great future with his new band and other exciting projects. He needs to devote all his energy into making it all a success. We both wish him all the luck in the world.

Scott Devours – Who fans will know from Roger’s solo shows – will be replacing Zak. We hope all our fans will welcome him.

Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey”

This has been a turbulent time for the group, and “who” knows if this will last. Regardless, Zak Starkey left a huge mark on the group, and fans are not happy with this decision, many of them voicing their displeasure in Townshend’s initial Instagram post. This drummer debacle has put a shadow on what should be a tour celebrating the legacy of this iconic rock group.
