'The Legend Of Vox Machina' Season 4 Episodes 1-3 Review

“Doty, take this down”, is a quote you’ll hear a lot this season, and is also a great way to describe the first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4. The group parted ways at the end of season 3, and Scanlan Shorthalt departed to be with his daughter. The rest of our heroes all went off on their own adventures. This season introduces a new character in Vox Machina, Taryon Darrington, and his mechanical servant and scribe, Doty.
These first three episodes are a doozy. Pike and Grog deal with a zombie priest lady. Percy and Vex deal with a mysterious orb and an undead creature in the woods. Vax and Keyleth are completing Keyleth’s aramente. Each of these events will eventually lead to the group reuniting to celebrate quickly, but since this is Vox Machina, things quickly turn south.

A mysterious group attacks, but somehow the events that Pike, Grog, Percy, and Vex all encountered are connected to this group. They serve a bigger, more powerful force, which fans of the campaign will know who it is. I cannot wait for the big reveal in the show of their biggest foe yet.

The scene transitions are so well done. In one scene, you had an old woman running from Grog, Pike, and Taryon, which would then transition into Vex running away from a monster. This happened a few times, and it was such a cool thing. I know I have said this every season, but the animation this season is the best it’s been. The big fight scene in episode 3 is my favorite. The animation here looks amazing, especially when the ashari fight the mysterious figures. Various colors hit together, and it looks so fluid. It’s a brutal fight, and it shows us how dark and depressing this season is going to be, and how big a threat this new foe will be
One of the weirdest things so far is not hearing Sam Riegel's voice. We know that Scanlan is off on an adventure with his daughter, but Sam does not voice his other character in the animated show. We are finally introduced to Taryon Darrington, who Wayne Brady voices in the animated series. Sam spoke on this at NYCC and thought he wouldn’t be able to change up his voice enough for the role. This could confuse new viewers, who might think that Taryon is Scanlan in disguise (he's not). While Sam is missed, Wayne Brady does a phenomenal job as Taryon. Taryon is a wonderful character, but takes some getting used to. He is much different from Scanlan and is quite annoying at first. While he’s not in Vox Machina long, he does leave a lasting impression that fans will always remember.

It’s bittersweet, as this is the second-to-last season of The Legend of Vox Machina. I remember when this was a Kickstarter to make an episode, and somehow, it’s evolved into five seasons. This looks like it’s going to be the darkest season yet, and I cannot wait to see this final arc of the campaign play out in animation.
