As the penultimate season continues, every episode brings us closer to the big villain reveal. We’ve seen plenty of teases to know that it’s The Whispered One, but the actual reveal will be very exciting when it does finally happen. These three episodes have focused on finding more information about the crystals and this new foe, with a splash of revealing secrets and bad home lives.
Episode 4 gives us more insight into who Taryon Darrington is. Even though he came from wealth, his home life isn’t good, as his father has no faith in him. Not only that, but his father is a huge jerk and just an all-around bad dude.

He also collects Exandrian artifacts, a lot of which he doesn’t even know what they are. As Vox Machina investigates the mysterious crystals, they try to prove to Taryon that his dad isn’t all he seems.

While some Vox Machina are off finding the crystals, Percy and Grog stay behind to talk “business” with Taryon’s dad. During their “negotiations,” Tary’s dad takes out a deck of cards that could have endless possibilities, both good and bad. Fans will recognize this as the deck of many things. It was so cool to see this animation, and how the cards can bring great wealth, as shown with Tary’s dad in the scene, but also great danger, as shown when Grog summoned the unicorn. It’s such a cool mechanic, and I’m glad we got to see it animated.
One of the coolest episodes so far has been episode 5. It was your classic old-timey heist episode, music and all. We also got a special title card for this episode. It featured the group breaking into the Cobalt Soul vaults to find information about the Whispered One. It goes about as well as you’d expect it to go for them. Vex and Vax are under a truth spell, and reveal some shocking secrets to each other. Pike also reveals a vision she saw, regarding the Whispered One. Even though the heist doesn’t go as planned, they do manage to get some information from Grog, surprisingly. While we know Sam Reigel is talented, one of the things he excels at is music, and we got to see that expertise at work in this episode. The whole episode was so well done, and one of my favorites of this series.

It’s hard to believe that with episode 6, the season is already halfway done. This episode is heavy. One of the common themes in Critical Role campaigns is the idea of family, whether found or otherwise. This episode is a prime example of that. Vex and Keyleth confront each other, then the Matron.
Vax and Percy have their own confrontation, and Pike and Groggo visit their pop-pop. Even though they’re scared of the outcome, they will always have each other in Vox Machina. We also got to see the cult back in action, with a very familiar face at the end of the episode.
These three episodes have been the best so far. Their biggest foe yet is coming, and it’s going to be rough for Vox Machina. I have a feeling it won’t be wrapped up this season, as there is one final season, but I do hope we at least get a big reveal.
