'The Legend Of Vox Machina' Season 4 Episodes 10-12 Review

Vecna

Hey Stranger Things, Vox Machina fought Vecna first! Okay, Vecna has been around for a long time in D&D lore, but as far as recent pop culture, Vox Machina fought Vecna before he became cool. This entire season led up to this moment, and it was absolutely incredible. It was an explosive finale that will have many consequences for Vox Machina, which will include their biggest foe yet, Vecna.

Vox Machina finally comes face-to-face with the Whispered One. First, however, they infiltrate the cult, which does not go as planned. They try to fight the members inside the circle, so they can’t be healed. It doesn’t go well. Before their planned explosion, Grog gets sucked into the orb, and Pike follows behind him. The rest of them decide to follow them into Thar Amphala. Here, they must fight the cult on their own turf, all while trying to stop the Whispered One’s ascension.

We also get the return of Allura, Kima, and Gilmore, who all try to stop the group before they go into the orb. The episode also ended with a shocking deal. They truly saved the best for last, and it leaves you wanting the next season soon.

Vecna! We finally got the Vecna reveal, and it was worth waiting for. He is absolutely terrifying, and Vox Machina thought they were done with him once they took the orb back to Whitestone, but it’s never that easy for them. He followed them and made them bow their allegiance. He’s voiced by Andy Serkis, who was a perfect choice and always knocks it out of the park.

Vax has been suffering with a blight caused by the Raven Queen. In the regular world, it’s seen as a curse, but when they’re in Vecna’s realm, it’s a blessing. He has special powers that enable him to see the threads of everyone there and their weak spots. This gives the group a considerable advantage and makes their task somewhat easier. This was such a cool thing, and the animation, with the gold every time it was activated, was so pretty.

One of the big themes this season was loss. There’s the lingering knowing that Vax will die after fulfilling his obligation to the Matron. Keyleth lost her father due to the Whispered One. No one, however, has suffered more than Pike this season. She lost the man she loved, Scanlan, who went to be with his daughter. She lost her Pop Pop, also due to the Whispered One, and then Grog. It’s no wonder she finally snapped when the Whispered One offered to bring Grog back. She was not happy that the rest of the group didn’t reach out to her the year they were apart, so she had her reasons to do what she did. Not only that, she also had a major crisis of faith when she realized that the Everlight had abandoned her. Ashley Johnson did an incredible job because you could feel Pike’s pain through the screen.

Each season of this show just keeps getting better, and it’s hard to believe that there is only one more season left. What started as a little Kickstarter to make a single episode somehow evolved into five seasons. This has been the best season yet, and while I am so sad this series is almost done, I am so excited to see them come fight Vecna in the final season.
