'The Mighty Nein' Episode 5 Spoiler-Free Review

The Mighty Nein animated series really started to heat up in episode 5. It gave us Caleb’s backstory and insight into his relationship with Trent Ikathon. We got to see Caleb’s rise from a young farm boy to a powerful wizard. There was a lot of fire involved, and fans know that that’s probably not a good thing when it relates to Caleb. This is the best episode in the season so far.
Caleb Widowgast wasn’t always Caleb Widowgast. In fact, he started as Bren Ermendrud and is from the Zemni Fields. I loved that when Caleb was first introduced, it was all in the Zemnian language. One day, however, they get a visit from Trent Ikathon, who wants to take Bren to the Solstryce Academy and train him. The episode goes back and forth between the current day and glimpses back into the past. The final moment they showed from Caleb’s past involved his beloved cat, Frumpkin. It was a very depressing scene, and he was never the same after it. Meanwhile, the group fights Owelia, who was chasing Beau, and is a figure from Caleb’s past. She poisons Fjord, who gets sick and is quite close to death. They find a place to rest up, and so Beau and Caleb can finally question Owelia.

If you’ve watched the campaign, then you know how powerful Caleb can be. This episode really highlighted that, and it wasn’t even his full power. Beau and Caleb successfully captured Owelia and took her to an abandoned farmhouse for questioning. Of course, it didn’t go as planned, and Caleb’s past was revealed. This put Caleb and Beau at odds, with Caleb eventually running off after Owelia escaped. The two confront each other, but Caleb has the upper hand. It does not go well for Owelia, and Caleb uses all his strength to confront a demon from his past.
One of my favorite parts of this campaign was the relationships the characters formed with each other. Obviously, the most prominent one we’ve seen is Nott and Caleb. It’s clear that they both care for each other deeply and even rely on each other in different moments. Nott was the one to help Caleb come down from his fire spell this episode. Everyone thinks they are a father/daughter type duo, and Beau even says this to Nott. Nott, however, reveals that she is the mother and he is the son in their relationship. Nott does have those motherly tendencies, as we saw her with Fjord when he was sick with poison. If you’ve watched the campaign, then you know why this is, but it will be exciting for new fans to see why Nott is like this.

This episode was phenomenal. The animation, as always, was gorgeous. Caleb is the standout of the season so far and is definitely the most powerful in the group right now. I can’t wait for new fans to see what he becomes, and how his relationship with the rest of the Nein grows.
