Is Nik Sant Really Rex?

Star Wars fans are known for creating fan theories and their own head canon for how many of the new characters being introduced could have been tied to some of George Lucas’ original content. There is no fan theory more talked about than whether or not Captain Rex is actually Nik Sant in Return of the Jedi. There are definitely some arguments that could be made on both sides, so let’s take a look at who Nik Sant is and whether or not he could actually be Captain Rex. It is important to note that neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have ever said whether or not Nik Sant is Captain Rex.
Who Is Nik Sant?
Nik Sant is a background character who appears only a handful of times during the Battle of Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi. He has no speaking lines and does not play a significant role in the film. In some older Star Wars Legends material, Nik Sant is said to be a veteran rebel commando, but he doesn’t have any other backstory. He was portrayed by actor L. Burner, and according to the Return of the Jedi IMDb page, he is simply listed as “Rebel Forest Trooper (uncredited).” According to Wookieepedia, the name Nik Sant was given to him in The Official Star Wars Fact File 44 in October 2002. The name is a play on Saint Nick because the writers believed he looked like Santa Claus. Very little else is known about this character.

Who Is Captain Rex?
Captain Rex is one of the most beloved characters in all of Star Wars, but he wasn’t officially introduced to fans until Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, where fans got to know him better throughout the subsequent series. He was Anakin Skywalker’s right-hand man, and he later became one of Ahsoka’s closest friends and allies. He always put his brothers first and would do anything for the people he cared about.
In Star Wars Rebels, we are given a look at an older Rex who comes back to join the Rebellion and help take down the Empire. He is strategically brilliant and hates the Empire more than almost anyone else because of everything they took from him and their willingness to destroy the Clones.

Could Nik Sant Be Captain Rex?
The theory that Nik Sant was really Captain Rex began to gain traction after fans saw him in Rebels. He was now slightly larger in build and had a full white beard, making him look almost identical to the Rebellion fighter seen on Endor. This theory gained even more attention when Dave Filoni was asked about it, and he said, “I’d like to think Rex was at Endor.” This has been Filoni’s official stance for years, and he has even gone as far as to shrug and then tell fans, “It’s a fun idea, isn’t it?”
When we last see Rex during Rebels, he is an active part of the Rebellion, and he is wearing an outfit that is suspiciously similar to what Nik Sant is wearing on Endor. Many feel that this theory was confirmed in the reference book Secrets of the Clone Troopers released in 2024, which showed Rex on the moon during the battle. Unfortunately, without an official comment from Disney or Lucasfilm, we can only speculate.

I believe that Nik Sant is Captain Rex, and even if an official statement was made to the contrary, it wouldn’t change my mind.
Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels are available to stream on Disney+.
