Why We Aren’t Done With The Skywalker Period Of ‘Star Wars’

Since the release of the sequel trilogy, many Star Wars fans have said that they are ready to be done with the “Skywalker period” of Star Wars. While I recognize that 90% of the content we currently have is set during this period and revolves around the same characters (Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luke, Leia, etc.), it is important to remember that there is so much that happened during this period of time that we aren’t aware of. My favorite characters in the franchise are all from the Skywalker Saga, and even I can accept that it is time we move on from those characters. However, I do not think that it is time to completely abandon this period of time. Let’s take a look at why this period of Star Wars is so important and a few ways that Disney and Lucasfilm could move forward with new content.

Aside from the Ahsoka series, I would be more than happy to completely move on from most of the characters that were featured prominently in the current Skywalker Saga content. The main reason that I do not think we should completely move on from this period of time is because of the fan reaction to The Acolyte. This series thoroughly explored a different period of time in the galaxy and told a story that featured no previously known characters, and the response from fans was horrible. Even if you removed all of the racist and sexist commentary, there were still many fans who felt blindsided by the fact that we were thrown into a period of time that we had never experienced before, unless you were reading the Star Wars novels. I think that this showed that fans are not quite ready for such a big change, but they are open to it happening in the future.

I think that the best way to proceed with Star Wars content would be to explore the plethora of content that exists within the Star Wars Legends novels. I have not read any of them yet, but I have seen hundreds of people on social media discussing different events that they would love to see as a film or series. If Disney and Lucasfilm really want to explore other parts of the galaxy, a great way to start would be to dive headfirst into these novels and explore events that were happening concurrently with events and characters we already know. In doing this, they introduce us to new parts of the galaxy while also keeping us grounded in a period of time that we know well. Another great thing about moving forward with this type of content is that there is already a fan base since the novels have been beloved by fans for decades. I would love to explore more of the galaxy, but even I am getting tired of hearing the same stories just told from different perspectives.

Another great way to explore different aspects of the galaxy would be to lean more into the politics of Star Wars. Andor’s success proved that fans are ready for more mature content, so it would be interesting to see what was going on within the Separatist Senate. We get a few small glimpses of it in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but for the most part, fans are left completely in the dark. The massacre of the Nightsisters on Dathomir would be another interesting story to explore and would finally give Star Wars the opportunity to get into the horror genre.  It is important for both studios to recognize that although there are young Star Wars fans, most of the fanbase has grown up with the franchise and are ready for more mature content. There are so many unique stories that are waiting to be told, and it would be a waste to ignore all of them just because the studios want to get away from the characters that they have overplayed.

The entire Skywalker Saga, as well as other standalone Star Wars content, is available to stream on Disney+.
