Godzilla Minus Zero is the long-awaited sequel to Godzilla Minus One. We continue the story of Koichi, Noriko and Akiko and them dealing with the post-Godzilla world they live in. A new threat emerges, and they must team up with new and familiar faces to fight the new threat. The movie delivers excellent kaiju battles, but also a heartbreaking story. This was such a great sequel, and dare I say, it was even better than its predecessor.
This was more Ghidorah’s movie than it was Godzilla's, and that's okay. Ghidorah is ‘Monster Zero’, and the main point of the movie, so the title makes sense. We see him the most in the movie, including in the first few minutes. Ghidorah is the threat in this movie, not Godzilla. Godzilla doesn’t even show up until a bit later. Ghidorah, even without his three-headed form, which he evolves into later, can level cities and cause much more destruction than Godzilla could. While Godzilla is scary, Ghidorah is terrifying. Godzilla even has a hard time against him when they fight. Some may say Ghidorah is overdone, but he was such a great choice to be the threat for this movie.

The original Godzilla was about the horrors of war. Shin Godzilla touched on the uselessness of government bureaucracy, and Minus One touched on survivors' guilt. Minus Zero’s theme is PTSD. All of these characters survived Godzilla and his destruction from the last movie. You also have the new character, the scientist Murkami, who survived not only Godzilla but also the bombing of Hiroshima. This drives him to revenge and enables them to summon Godzilla. He was one of the saddest characters in the movie as well, and a great addition to the cast. When Koichi and Noriko hear about Ghidorah, they are rightfully scared, but it’s even worse when they hear that Godzilla has returned. Eventually, the two of them agree to help fight Ghidorah. Akiko has trauma from them leaving. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see all of these characters go through this again. This was truly the best theme they could’ve used for this movie.
This movie was the loudest IMAX movie I have ever seen, which isn’t a bad thing. The music was incredible, especially Ghidorah’s theme. There’s a sequence when Ghidorah and Godzilla are fighting, where the music switches and goes into Godzilla’s theme. It was magnificent. The special effects are next level, and Godzilla’s new form and Ghidorah look amazing.

I don’t have a bad thing to say about this movie. My jaw dropped multiple times because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The story was great, and these characters are some of the best in the Godzilla franchise. The R rating was appropriate, especially with the increased violence and the harrowing scenes we saw. Takashi Yamazaki is a master at Godzilla movies. This is a must for Godzilla fans, and make sure you check it out in IMAX, because it is spectacular and literally larger than life in the premium format.
