Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2027, and Lucasfilm plans to celebrate with a theatrical release. The film will be shown the weekend of April 30, 2027, and should still be in theaters on May 4 for Star Wars Day. This is a big year for the franchise as at the beginning of April 2027, Los Angeles will host Star Wars Celebration. Following the re-release, Star Wars: Starfighter will land in theaters on May 28, 2027. Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth play the leads in Starfighter, and the movie is directed by Shawn Levi. There is one more announced Star Wars project. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released in theaters on May 22, 2026. This marks the first new Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker

In other news, Disney announced a film adaptation of David Kraus’ novel Whalefall. The story centers on a scuba diver who has been swallowed by a sperm whale. The film stars Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin. It will be released on October 16, 2026. Next May looks to be the start of a great season for Star Wars fans, culminating a year later with Celebration, the re-release of the film that started it all, and a new movie to cap it all off.
