Helldivers 2 has seen a resurgence in interest following the launch of the popular 2024 game on Xbox, bringing the player base beyond the PS5 and Steam user base. Since news of this broke on July 3, for weeks, fans have been making a series of heroic and epic videos and TikToks of Halo veterans and new Xbox players coming to reinforce the current player base.
On Xbox drop day, Arrowhead Studios released a video discussing their upcoming update to the game. For the uninitiated, Helldivers 2 is a live-service game, where the studio consistently updates the game with new maps, objectives, items, and scenarios to keep player engagement high.
In their latest video, they set up a scenario where the insectoid Terminids have invaded Super Earth territory. To strike back at them, Helldivers will go deep into Terminid territory to the Terminid homeworld, and for the first time, they’ll be venturing underground. Like much of the game, it’s reminiscent of Starship Troopers.
This will be a first for a game that relies heavily on support powers in the form of artillery and equipment drops from orbiting ships. Now that players will be heading underground, they will not be able to call those in unless there is a break in the cave overhead. They are introducing two new game modes on these maps. The first has players go deep underground to find the Hive Lung, which pumps the surface air with the fog that is commonly found on Terminid maps. The other is a sort of escort mission where players pilot a mobile oil rig around and drill for oil.

To make the game even more intense, they added new units. Burrowing units that will dig into the ground and tunnel at you, springing up to charge you or throw acid bombs. Or a new flying unit that is basically a flying bile titan (the gigantic walking big bads), so that’s fun. One of the developers even joked and hinted at an even bigger tunneling enemy to fight. To celebrate the launch on Xbox and equip players for their journey underground, they introduced a bunch of new weapons in their new warbonds. One of them is a tribute to Halo: ODST.
The game is now available on Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC.
