Rebecca Sugar, the creative mind behind Steven Universe, is bringing the Moomins to the big screen in a joint project by Moomin Characters and Annapurna. Julia Pistor, known for the SpongeBob movies and The Rugrats films, will serve as producer. The Moomins are rotund troll characters popular around the world with novels translated into 60 different languages, television adaptations in 120 countries, and a comic strip in 40 countries. The Moomins first emerged on the scene during World War II in books by Finnish writer and artist Tove Jansson. The Moomins are delightful rotund trolls from Moominvalley, and their adventures are accompanied by themes of friendship, bravery, and respect.
Roleff Kråkström, CEO of Moomin Characters, shared his enthusiasm for the new film, “We are thrilled to partner with the talented Rebecca Sugar as well as Annapurna for this milestone new film. We are excited to see how this accomplished team will reinterpret the beloved Moomin stories and for them to be discovered and rediscovered by old and new fans alike.” Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein, co-presidents of Annapurna Animation, expressed similar sentiments: “We’re honored to bring Tove Jansson’s timeless vision to the big screen. Along with Rebecca and Julia, we can’t wait to introduce these beloved characters – and the humor, heart, and subversive spirit Tove brought to her work – to new audiences.” Sugar’s project will mark the first Moomins film produced in the United States.
