It’s been less than a month since the price for Grand Theft Auto VI was announced, and the dust still hasn’t settled. When it was revealed, it was also revealed that the “physical” game would just be the box with box art and a code to download the game. This in turn, was followed up by Sony’s announcement that they would no longer be publishing physical discs after 2027. The two announcements seemed to coincide with each other, and the games industry has been in an uproar since.

Now, after a recent update for Grand Theft Auto Online, players are expressing further concern about the yet-to-be-released game. The update in question surrounds changes to heist payouts. In particular, they rebalanced the payouts with the Kortz and other heists. The highest payouts are for the first weekly play-through, but as a result, they are reducing the payouts of subsequent plays to avoid over-saturating the market. The reduction of the Cayo Perico heist is drawing particular ire, especially since this is the third reduction in the payout of the mission. Running the Kortz heist is also a sticking point, despite players getting millions for logging on with a subscription, it costs $15 million if players don’t have a mansion just to runt he heist.

The connection to Grand Theft Auto VI concerns what will happen with GTA Online. So far, Rockstar has been stressing that GTA VI will be a single-player experience. This has led to some speculation if there will be a new GTA Online that comes later, an update to the current game with a new map, or if the current game will just continue. Considering the base game is going to retail for $80 (the special edition will run for $100), players are concerned that this recent update to GTA Online portends a future of further monetization of the game they love. And in a landscape that is turning uglier by the second for gamers, that could price some out of enjoying the full experience.
