With anything relating to the prospect of a Half-Life story, take it with some skepticism. The potential sequel to two of the most beloved games of all time is one of the most highly anticipated announcements from gamers, and the source of a hefty amount of memes, but it’s decades in the making.

This latest one comes from Tyler McVicker. He’s a known source for reporting about Valve rumors, and in his latest livestream Q&A, he makes an interesting claim: Half-Life 3 is not only playable, but an announcement about it could come this year, maybe even a release.

Engadget reports this with a healthy amount of scrutiny, but they do comment about a series of reports that suggest this bit by McVicker may not be too far from true. Accordingly, a Valve concept artist, Evgeniy Evstratiy, commented on a podcast, CG Voices, that he had been in the room where Half-Life 3 was made. Within the same month, a leaker, Gabe Follower, claims that the game would be the end of Gordon Freeman’s, the main character's, adventure. Furthermore, Valve data miners have found references in code to updates for DOTA 2 and Deadlock.

Now, it’s been 20 years since Half-Life 2 was released, and there have been episodes released as well as Alix the VR game, but a true sequel is still awaited by fans. Gabe Newell, the President of Valve, has talked about being stumped on where even the third episode of Half-Life 2 would go.

Are we likely to see it this year? Probably not, but like most things, there’s a non-zero chance that we hear anything about Half-Life 3.
