The AI company Midjourney has come under fire for copyright infringement. In a lawsuit against the company, Warner Bros claims that the company violates copyright due to Midjourney allowing users to create images with characters like Batman, Superman, Scooby Doo, and Bugs Bunny. The lawsuit further alleges that Midjourney’s recent cancellation of its video generation model constitutes an implicit admission that the company is at fault. A spokesperson for Warner Bros said, “The heart of what we do is develop stories and characters to entertain our audiences, bringing to life the vision and passion of our creative partners. Midjourney is blatantly and purposefully infringing copyrighted works, and we filed this suit to protect our content, our partners, and our investments.” Disney and NBC Universal echoed similar sentiments.

Midjourney disputed the claims and said the AI learns how to draw similar to humans, that is, by looking at images first and then proceeding to create characters. However, images provided in the lawsuit show a Midjourney output character that is almost identical to Superman. The Motion Picture Association CEO Charles Rivkin endorsed Warner Bros with a public statement, “We remain concerned that copyright infringement, left unchecked, threatens the entire American motion picture industry, which supports over 2 million jobs in all 50 states and drives countless economic, social, and cultural benefits.” As the lawsuit is still in the early stages, Midjourney users won’t have to worry about interruptions to the service for now.
