After working at DC Comics for 11 years, since 2015, Andrea Shea was promoted to senior editor in 2015.

They joined the company at a pivotal time, when the comic book publisher moved from New York City to Burbank, California, and has seen a steady ascension up the corporate ladder, from an executive assistant, to their most recent role before this new promotion, where they were an editor.

Shea is notable for their push that the comic publisher should celebrate and persistently expand the company’s LGBTQIA+ roster of characters. What exact characters or storylines Shea helped support to this end are uncertain, but an internal interview within Warner Bros. Discovery notes their belief in needing to support courageous creative decisions by artists, writers, and other company creatives, and to build on those decisions going into the future.

Andrea Shea’s new role as a senior editor means that they will likely be put in charge of a specific area of the DC universe, as the company divides their senior editors between handling a cluster of titles (ongoing comics) as they relate to a specific character. For example, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman each have their own individual groupings, so Shea’s influence could focus on one of these more notable characters, or could see a new character or area of the DC universe get some greater focus with new projects or refreshes to ongoing projects under Shea’s wing.

We’ll have to wait for further news on this front, but it is an exciting appointment within the comic giant.
