'Arc Raiders' Parent Company Nexon Bigs Up It's Controversial Use Of AI

Depiction of Arc Raiders’ ubiquitous Raiders

Despite the recent news that Arc Raiders would be reducing the amount of AI voices in the game, it appears that is to be the extent of the rollbacks with AI.

Nexon, the parent company of Arc Raiders developer Embark, were extremely bullish about its use of AI in a financial presentation held at the end of March. Calling the game a “Trojan horse” that will help show the benefits of AI in the realms of spending “more time innovating; less time writing code,” Embark’s own leadership similarly remains bullish about AI’s future in gaming, with comments by the company’s founder Patric Soderlund backing up those of Nexon.

The companies appear to be so eager because of the unfortunately stellar financial results. Creators of both The Finals and Arc Raiders, Embark’s Arc Raiders in particular has sold 14 million units in fifteen weeks according to Nexon. This is even though the Steam page highlights the game’s use of procedure generated AI artwork, but claims “the final product reflects the creativity and expression of our own development team."

We here at CultureSlate are firmly anti-AI, and it is deeply concerning to see that the ongoing success of this title has apparently emboldened both Nexon and Embark to continue to make use of various generative technologies at the cost of human creative voices, hands, and minds.

As a reminder, Embark’s own leadership openly stated that their game’s AI voices are inferior to those properly voiced by real people. AI is not equal to the work of real humans.
