What should be a day of excitement and jubilation for Bethesda fans is marred by the absolute shellacking the industry and XBOX in particular is undergoing. Bethesda, yesterday, confirmed what many had suspected and hoped for for some time now, but it comes off as mostly a PR stunt to try and save face, and perhaps not even in the best way, when they updated fans on the state of Fallout 5, Elder Scrolls VI, and more.
On social media yesterday, Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda, posted a lengthy post Howard touted the studio’s 40 year history, it’s games’ successes, and the roadmap for the years to come. He first name dropped Starfield, the newest IP in the studio’s lineup and it’s most mediocre performing one at that. Though it’s not as high performing as Fallout or Elder Scrolls, he marked it’s 17 million players and over a billion hours played as an achievement and that they will continue to support the game going forward with more content.

As for Fallout, Howard dropped that Fallout 5 is their “long range destination”, is currently in pre-production, and they are working on numerous Fallout projects. Fallout 76 will continue to see support, and there are remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas currently in production. Fallout Shelter, their mobile game, also received a mention, with new seasons, and a reminder that there is an unscripted TV-adaptation coming to Amazon Prime TV. Howard also mentioned there won’t be a Fallout Day celebration this year, but they’re planning something big for next year at a live celebration in Washington D.C. Finally, he talked about the bringing back of Obsidian into the fold as they begin work on a new Fallout game (widely suspected is Fallout: New Vegas 2), and their continued support with Zenimax, the developer working on Elder Scrolls Online.
He wasn’t as wordy on Elder Scrolls VI, which has long been in production, and after the recent layoffs, developers have taken to social media to express their concerns that they worry it’s production will be negatively affected by the reduction in staff. He did however state that it is their current primary goal, and is utilizing their proprietary Creation Engine 3 along with Fallout 5.
Again, all of this would have landed with more cheer and enthusiasm, but instead, the excitement comes with a slightly foul taste in the mouth after all that has come before it, and smells of an attempt to save whatever face they have left.
