Just days after Dan Gilroy’s Emmy win for Andor Season 2, concerns about Hollywood’s freedom of speech have erupted throughout the entertainment industry. Gilroy won for an episode that featured Mon Mothma’s speech before the Galactic Senate, where she spoke against Palpatine, making her position against the Empire crystal clear. In the wake of Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension for his remarks about Charlie Kirk on Jimmy Kimmel Live, prominent Hollywood writers and actors have begun protesting for their First Amendment right to freedom of speech. One of these writers is Dan Gilroy, who masterfully crafted the resistance against fascism through his award-winning writing for “Welcome to the Rebellion”. Gilroy rang the warning bells in his scathing commentary for Deadline on the future of artists and the choice that awaits Hollywood. “Many people saw parallels between Andor and the real world. I see them as well, particularly in the events of the last week”, Gilroy explains. Fans and creatives have been seen protesting with signs that question whether Disney officials have watched Andor themselves.

There’s obviously irony in Andor’s strict critique of fascism and the fact that Kimmel was fired from ABC, which is one of the networks under Disney. Still, there’s already fear among fans of the series that Andor could suddenly vanish from Disney+ in light of the current events. Whether this happens or not is something only time will tell, but Gilroy knows Hollywood bigwigs have tough choices to make. Dan Gilroy disagrees with the decision to suspend Kimmel, but he believes it wasn’t an easy decision for Disney. He also thinks the decision bought them time, which is true, as there are already reports that Disney officials are in talks with Kimmel on how to continue the show, so everyone involved in the production isn’t left jobless. Gilroy warns that “Disney now stands at a crossroads: terminate Kimmel’s contract and become pavement for the road to a brave new Trumpian world; or stand for the First Amendment and take the onslaught. There’s not much at stake, just free speech, the oxygen that sustains life in this town.”

Ultimately, Dan Gilroy fears that Kimmel is just the beginning of a much larger attack on Freedom of Speech for creatives in the entertainment industry, and worries there may be more to come. Much like his beloved dialogues on Andor, Gilroy eloquently warns, ”Regardless of how the jack-booted attack on Jimmy Kimmel is resolved, this isn’t a skirmish. It’s a siege.” For now, there’s a lot at stake for Disney with stars of their upcoming releases, including Pedro Pascal, openly standing against them. With the threat of boycotts and fans hitting the unsubscribe button on Disney+, time is ticking for Disney to salvage their brand, reputation, and protect the First Amendment.
