Maul will never die. Except for when he does during the third season of Rebels. But that moment was powerful, built up across the many failures fans had already seen Maul endure. From his first appearance in The Phantom Menace, across The Clone Wars, and even in Rebels. Despite failing in his goals, Maul doesn’t give up. Now, a new series is coming that will add a large chapter to the life of Maul. Rebuilding his criminal enterprise. In the wake of Maul: Shadow Lord’s two episode premiere on April 6, Esquire talked with Dave Filoni and others involved with the series to set the mood for that next chapter.

Filoni sums Maul up as being “afraid, and power is the only way that he knows to really overcome this fear of his. This fear of being insignificant, of being forgotten, of being nothing.” Maul: Shadow Lord will explore that fear as he rebuilds what he lost during the Republic’s transition to the first galactic Empire. Though the Mandalorians stand with him, others abandoned him during that transition. The series will show him rebuilding his connections to the criminal underworld, putting himself back on top.

Sam Witwer, voice of Maul, states that Maul is “reassessing what he needs to do to get back on the map, how to get back onto the galactic stage. He needs to reassert his dominance and his ability to be taken seriously,” during this series. And to do that, “he must go around and maybe teach a few people a few lessons.” This has been seen in the trailer, where the Pykes were seen on the planet of Janix, where Shadow Lord takes place.

Being a series about the criminal underworld, it makes sense to take inspiration from gangster tales of the past. Much like Star Wars as a concept was dreamt up from Flash Gordon serials and World War II movies. It’s something that Matt Michnovetz, head writer and executive producer of the series, says the creative team have explored the breadth of gangster film history. He says that they’re “big fans of the movie Heat by Michael Mann. Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables was a big part of this.”

Maul’s criminal underworld rebuilding begins when Maul: Shadow Lord arrives on Disney+ April 6. Two episodes a week will release until the finale on Star Wars Day. A second season has already been confirmed to be in development.
