It’s been a few months since the last episodes of Andor season two arrived on Disney+, ending the series that served as a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The series showed the rise of Cassian Andor from a nobody surviving the Empire on his own terms to one of the greatest spies of the Rebellion. Season two did a lot of skipping across years to show that growth. Now, the original pitch of Tony Gilroy for that second season has been made available to see at pop-up events advertising the series.

Dated December 2022, the pitch of Gilroy says to think of the season as “a two-part novel,” describing it as “an adventure story about the rise of a galactic revolution, told through the journey of a nobody who ascends to an epic destiny.” It mentions the growing network of Luthen a year after the Ferrix riot. The relationships between Cassian and Bix, and Dedra and Syril, and how those relationships change. And also the Ghorman Massacre and what follows.

The pitch is very true to what the season delivered, right down to the final block showing “Luthen’s defiance will see him so discredited that, even when he gives everything for the intel that will lead to the discovery of the Death Star, the information will be discounted as the ravings of an outlier.” That this original pitch is so close to what was delivered shows the trust in Gilroy by Lucasfilm.

The pitch ends with the line, “Their sacrifices, like so many of our characters, will be epic.” Such a line really reflects Andor as a whole. Right from the first mission Cassian takes on for Luthen in season one, the characters and all they sacrificed to begin the downfall of the Empire felt truly epic.
