DreamWorks Animation has had a bit of a rough time over the past couple of years. While Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Wild Robot were notable successes for the company, multiple projects have been cancelled or delayed regardless of their progress in the release pipeline. Things have begun to look up in recent months, though, and today’s news is no different.
A DreamWorks project just got a theatrical release date. Set for Fall of 2026, Forgotten Island is an animated film written and directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. Little else is known about the film at this time, though it has been described as a “broad party comedy adventure that transports the film’s protagonists to a long forgotten, magical island rooted in Philippine mythology.” Mark Swift, a longtime collaborator with Joel Crawford, is producing the film.
Forgotten Island looks poised to try and capture some of the success of recent Disney films like Coco and Encanto by transporting or setting the main characters in a fantastical world based in a culture largely unknown to most Western audiences.
DreamWorks’ other recent releases include Bad Guys 2 later this year and the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon.
