Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studios, known for the Yakuza/Like A Dragon franchise, announced a new game a while ago, called Stranger Than Heaven. When it was revealed, fans got a quick glimpse of the game, which takes place in Japan. For those who are fans of the Yakuza series, one particular location stood out, Kamurocho. This led fans to believe that the game would be a prequel to the Yakuza series. During an Xbox event the other day, more was revealed about the game, and it seems the fans were correct.
The game follows protagonist Makoto Daito and will take place over five different eras and locations in Japan. The story will begin in the year 1915, when Makoto decides to leave San Francisco and sneak aboard a ship to go to Japan. He meets a smuggler, Orpheus, played by Snoop Dogg, yes, you read that right, Snoop Dogg is in this game. Since it’s a Yakuza prequel, you can guess that Makoto ends up in a life of crime and will most likely have some sort of tie to the familiar Tojo Clan.

When it comes to fighting, they seem to have taken a different approach from the Yakuza games. It seems much more grounded, with more depth and buttons that are specifically mapped to the right and left sides of the body. There’s also a variety of weapons that can be used throughout.
The game will feature a variety of prominent actors from both Japan and the United States. The game will not have a specific English dub, but instead, will have characters speaking both Japanese and English, another thing different from the Yakuza games.
Stranger Than Heaven launches this winter on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
