The original lead guitarist of the band KISS, Ace Frehley, has passed away at the age of 74, on October 16, 2025. He was surrounded by friends and family, and apparently took a bad fall. Born Paul Daniel Frehley on April 27, 1951, he grew up in a musical family before pursuing a music career. He played in local bands and served as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix before becoming a founding member of KISS. The theatricality of KISS lent itself well to Frehley, who was known as “Space Ace” and “The Spaceman.” Frehley played with the group in some of their best songs, left in 1982, rejoined in the mid-90s before leaving again in 2002.
Ace Frehley is survived by family members, who were “completely devastated and heartbroken” by his loss. His former bandmates Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have released a joint statement about Frehley’s death: “We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band and its history. He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy.” Wherever he may be, hopefully there’s a lot of music there.
