'Helldivers' Movie Reportedly Has Its Director

While the wheels of Hollywood might turn slowly, the well of video game adaptations is a new source of plenty for many studios and so most projects in this area of the industry don’t stay quiet for long. Sony’s plan to create a Helldivers film has supposedly been advanced significantly, after its initial announcement almost a year ago.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Justin Lin of all people has apparently joined the fledgling project as its director as well as a producer. Lin is most notable for his extensive involvement with the Fast and Furious franchise and for directing Star Trek Beyond, though he recently stepped back from large Hollywood productions. But, if this reporting is accurate, then Helldivers is added to an increasingly packed slate of mainstream Hollywood projects, with Lin also involved in two other adaptations, one for One-Punch Man, and the other, Brzkr.

The Hollywood Reporter’s reporting has caused a stir among some areas of Helldivers 2’s fanbase, as the industry trade’s report states Lin apparently was very open in his pitch to Sony that he would bring an outsider perspective to the game whose world he hopes to build up, and add humanity to its characters. Fans have pointed out this could easily result in a poor adaptation, with this writer thinking about how the Halo show turned out when handled largely by creatives who openly discussed not having played the games in that franchise’s world.
As for the Helldivers film, if Lin is joining the project, he will be working with a script created by Gary Dauberman. Noted for his recent horror film scripts like Annabelle and It Chapter Two, he also wrote the very poorly received Until Dawn film adaptation that released earlier this year.
The project is ultimately looking a little uneasy for some, but the inclusion of the horror genre is a positive sign in this writer’s eyes that at least some elements of Sony understand what makes Helldivers, Helldivers. Considering there might be a lull in the months and years to come with regard to the film’s development, hopefully Justin Lin takes some time to join a few helldives in the game to at least get a taste for what kind of world he’s looking to help shape.
