Henry Cavill Is Also Involved In A 'Warhammer 40k' Animated Show

The ongoing, albeit slow, development of Warhammer content for the small screen has had some developments recently. After the recent news of Mike Flanagan’s involvement in the franchise, Variety is now reporting an exclusive regarding upcoming Warhammer projects.

An animated spin-off of Amazon’s Secret Level solely focused on Warhammer 40,000 is in the works, bringing together some of the same people who created the Warhammer short for that anthology series. Henry Cavill will serve as an executive producer alongside Tim Miller, who was in charge of Secret Level, while the Warhammer episode’s director, Dave Wilson, will serve as the co-creator and director of the new spin-off series. John Orloff will join Wilson in creating the series, with producer Natalie Viscuso also involved in developing the show.

Further details are limited at this time, aside from a quote from Wilson thanking Games Workshop and Amazon for allowing him to tell further stories in this universe, while underlining that Secret Level was conceived as “a launchpad for larger stories.” Considering one of those stories featured the now long-dead Concord, it seems likely Warhammer’s expansion is to be the only spin-off effort undertaken by Amazon for a while.

Variety also notes that the Deathwatch will play a role in the animated series. They are a group of Space Marines who hunt down threats to humanity as small-numbered strike forces sent to assassinate and disrupt the activities of hostile aliens. This news is intriguing, since an upcoming Warhammer video game will heavily feature the Deathwatch in a strategy game about taking out hostile xenos. As Warhammer continues to align its model releases with video game releases, it might be that video game releases are being lined up with ongoing small-screen developments of the franchise, and who knows what that could mean for the tabletop in the near future.
