While the recent release of information regarding Destiny 2: Renegades in the same livestream was certainly notable, many players were focused on the more immediate content release, due to Bungie remaining mum on its details over the past few months.

Ash & Iron is a modest-sized release of content that sends Guardians on a new mission-type against the enemies of Humanity in various regions of the Cosmodrome on Earth, including arenas set in the Plaguelands, a connected but separated area from the game’s Cosmodrome. Initially added back in the first Destiny with its final expansion, Rise of Iron, the Plaguelands is not returning as a fully-explorable location, but is still honeycombed with secrets to find for players moving through the activity set within its snow-drenched landscapes.

The update’s story revolves around the actions of Maya Sundaresh, a Golden Age scientist who has returned as an enemy to Humanity due to her obsession with restoring the Golden Age and her wife, Chioma Esi, to her. Unfortunately, Maya is insane, having already found and killed her wife due to the belief she wasn’t the correct Chioma, as there are multiple copies of both populating the vastness of the Vex Network, a realm Maya is looking to seize control of alongside its operators, the Vex.

That’s a whole different story, but to refocus on more immediate events, Maya is making moves to acquire the technology of the Golden Age found within the Cosmodrome. She seems to have conscripted an alternate-timeline Red Legion force of Cabal to reinforce her existing, hemorrhaging, force of Vex. Players must now battle Vex and Cabal baddies for the safety and security of Humanity’s present, to defend it from a threat looking to resurrect the past.

Alongside these story events are countless small gameplay changes, adjustments, and rollbacks, alongside Bungie’s promise of a roadmap of future changes in the coming weeks. The changes to key Destiny 2 gameplay experiences that first launched with Edge of Fate have had a mixed reception within the community, but it is clear that Bungie is making an effort to listen to community feedback on this topic.

Ash & Iron is currently available for all players of Destiny 2.
