After a brief mention of his project still being in the works at the opening panel of Star Wars Celebration Japan, Screen Rant sought and gained clarity on the production timeline of Taika Waititi’s movie.

Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan asked Kathleen Kennedy directly about her comment on Taika’s film still being in the works, and Kennedy’s response was this: "Taika is on Taika time... I've just continually said to him, look, when you feel that you're ready and you can really devote the time, we're going to do it. We'll be waiting... I'm just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie." In a further comment, Kennedy noted that Tony McNamara, who she revealed is penning the script, works well with Waititi. She also said that she hopes they get through development so Taika can tell his Star Wars story, given that he tells stories in such unique ways.

Taika Waititi is clearly a very busy man, but Lucasfilm appears happy to wait for him to be free to create his project at his own pace and on his own time. In the meantime, they certainly do have an embarrassment of riches in terms of other developing projects, with Star Wars: Starfighter formally announced at Celebration, and the unnamed films set in the New Jedi Order and Dawn of the Jedi eras. We’ll have to keep an eye on Taika’s schedule to see if and when he takes a break, and buckles down for creating some hardcore science-fantasy fun in the galaxy far, far away.
