Fans of the critically acclaimed videogame franchise, Kingdom Hearts, have reason to celebrate. Disney has announced at this year’s D23 Expo at its Ultimate Disney Fan Event that a Kingdom Hearts anime series has been greenlit for The Disney Channel, as well as its flagship D+ streaming service. The series is being developed in partnership with videogame creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix, which originally published the videogame series.
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family. “There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts, while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love.”

The first Kingdom Hearts game, released in 2002, features the character of Sora, a young boy whose world was destroyed around him, launching him into a quest to find his missing friends and prevent the armies of darkness from destroying other worlds. The anime series will feature a brand-new story that expands the universe of the videogame series. While the videogame series is not based on any one Disney property, Sora interacts with several popular Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Alice, Wendy Darling as well as several others throughout the course of the games.
The game has spawned several sequels and other media, including manga and soundtrack albums. J-pop Singer Hikaru Utada’s performance of the original Kingdom Hearts main theme song, Sanctuary, has helped her gain worldwide recognition. The series’ latest installment, Kingdom Hearts IV, is due for release sometime in 2027.
While there is no word on series actors and actresses, the videogame series has traditionally featured serious celebrity voiceover talent, including Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) as Sora, David Boreanaz (Bones), Billy Zane (Titanic), Hayden Panettiere (Ice Princess), Mandy Moore (Tangled), Christy Carlson Romano (Kim Possible), Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Jesse McCartney (Alvin and the Chipmunks), and Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid), among others.
