Disney’s latest live-action remake, Moana, failed to bring audiences in, clocking just $43 million in North America and $52 at its opening. The international box office increased to $95 million with high performances in Australia, France, and Korea. When the Snow White remake launched, it underperformed with some theorizing that the 1937 cartoon was too old to gather a dedicated audience. The original Moana cartoon was released just ten years ago. It seems that a single decade wasn’t long enough for nostalgia to grow, especially when audiences were just reunited with these characters in Moana 2 in 2024.

Moana had to compete with Toy Story 5 and Minions and Monsters, which earned $879.1 million and $280 million in the global box office, respectively. Both films feature beloved children’s characters in new plotlines, which families seemed to choose over a remake of a relatively recent film. Another factor is money is tight for a lot of families. With the upcoming Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, families may be budgeting for these big blockbusters and leaving the rest of the films for when they hit streaming. It seems that audiences are hungry for something new. It’s unclear if Disney will learn that lesson, though as the next live-action remake is Tangled, set to release in 2028. Since the original film was released in 2010, it may have a bit more nostalgia to power a higher box office, but, of course, that depends on audience trends in 2028 and what films are its competition.
