Lucasfilm Not Keen On Mara Jade Returning To 'Star Wars' Canon

Fans have loved Mara Jade since she first appeared in Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire in 1991. There, she was just one of the numerous characters introduced, including Grand Admiral Thrawn. While Thrawn was one of the first characters to be brought into the new canon after Disney’s reset of the Star Wars continuity, Mara Jade is just as beloved yet still has not. And it is unlikely she ever will.
During MegaCon 2026, some authors of Star Wars stories brought up the subject at the Writing the Star Wars Universe panel. Claudia Gray, author of Bloodline, stated, “A couple of times I was like, ‘Really? Really, no Mara Jade?’ And they were like, ‘[Stern Voice] Nope.’” Zahn backed that up, saying that “I asked them too.” He, too, would be told no.
It isn’t a surprise that such is the case. Thrawn, who was brought into canon with season three of Rebels, is a much easier fit within canon. Mara Jade comes with many issues. Chief among them being the fact she married Luke Skywalker and gave birth to a son who would be named Ben. Already knowing what Luke becomes in the sequel trilogy and his stance on attachments regarding his Jedi Order would be incompatible with current canon.
