After decades of being Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill still gets asked about his experience working on the original trilogy. At The Hollywood Reporter’s recent Actors’ Roundtable featuring Hamill, Dwayne Johnson, Jacob Elordi, Adam Sandler, and Jeremy Allen White, Hamill was asked by Johnson if he expected the movies to turn into such a big deal. Dwayne Johnson asked Hamill if he had a sense of how Star Wars would one day become, which allowed the Luke Skywalker actor to tell a hilarious story about his confusion at being given only a scene from the script. Hamill said he had questions about the story, to which George Lucas responded, “We’ll talk about it later. Translation: Let’s just do it. We’ll never, ever talk about it later.” He says he was “totally in the dark about the tone or the style”, but decided to “be as sincere as I could be.”

All jokes aside, Hamill says, “I’ll never forget reading that script for the first time because even without John Williams’ music, even without all the special effects, it was so entertaining, funny, ironic, I mean, effortless feminism. You had a princess, she was no damsel in distress.” Hamill told the production manager at the time that, “I think we’re on a winner.”Hamill thought it would make even more than Planet of the Apes, but he couldn’t have imagined just how far-reaching the impact of that one movie would be. Even though he’s done other work, Hamill remains highly regarded for his performance as Luke Skywalker, and every actor at the roundtable seemed in awe of the legend. In a room full of talented young actors, Hamill is the clear-cut icon who carries an undeniable aura.
