Issue #10 of Marvel’s Star Wars: Legacy of Vader comic book series reveals a meeting between Kylo Ren and his uncle, Luke Skywalker—well, Luke’s Force Ghost anyway. The encounter occurs during the year between the films The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Kylo senses that Luke may be keeping tabs on him in the afterlife. If we know anything about Star Wars, dead does not mean gone. This post-Crait interaction is spurred on when Kylo Ren returns to Fortress Vader on Mustafar. He senses Luke’s presence watching over him and becomes increasingly agitated in response to it. Vaneé, Darth Vader’s cybernetic former servant, suggests that Kylo check out the Sith Meditation Chamber for insight into how to handle putting an end to Luke watching him—sort of a “What Would Vader Do,” opportunity if you will. Now, here’s where it gets interesting: Either the meditation chamber induces a powerful vision, or Ben manages to pull off Force-travel by transporting his consciousness to the plane where the Force Ghosts hang out.

Once there, Kylo throws a bit of a hissy fit, demanding to know who killed Luke so he knows where to send the thank-you card. To which Luke infuriates him even more by saying, “No one killed me. I sacrificed my life for others, in service of something greater.” Jealousy rears its ugly head yet again when Kylo pivots to asking why Luke agreed to train Rey. Again, Luke’s answer gets under Kylo’s skin. He answers, “She wanted to learn.” Kylo threatens to destroy Luke even beyond death. But the ever-wise Jedi reminds him that to do that would mean destroying the Force itself. Luke points out that Ben’s traveling to the Force Ghost plane is special in and of itself. We do not see what happened between that conversation and Kylo’s return to his body, but when he exits the chamber, he is covered in what appears to be saber wounds. Vaneé sees the immediate need for healing and helps Kylo enter Vader’s Bacta Tank.

This latest issue’s significance is twofold. It teases the mystery of Vader’s secret vault, dropping breadcrumbs, if you will, about the powerful possibilities it holds, and that fans will likely see more from that storyline in good time. Secondly, this issue highlights the conflict between Ben Solo and his dark side, as Kylo Ren. Additionally, it does a nice job showing some of the steps toward Ben’s redemption arc when he sacrifices himself for Rey in The Rise of Skywalker.
