Matt Shakman, who directed The Fantastic Four: First Steps is moving from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take on the next film in the Planet of the Apes franchise. This new movie will not be a sequel to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which earned nearly $400 million in the global box office, but no other plot details have been announced yet. Josh Friedman, co-writer of First Steps and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will write this new film with Shakman, Riff Jaffa, and Amanda Silver as producers. Scott Aversano will oversee the production for 20th Century Studios as the Executive Vice President of Productions.

There was talk of a sequel to Kingdom, but the state of that project is unclear. Shakman is known for directing the first successful MCU series, WandaVision, along with the pilots for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, The Consultant, Welcome to Chippendales, and the upcoming Wild Things pilot and finale. He also worked on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Succession, and Game of Thrones. In addition to Kingdom, Friedman served as a co-writer for Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Shakman is represented by Untitled Entertainment and CAA while Friedman is represented by UTA.
