Matt Smith, best known to fans for his work in Doctor Who, The Crown, and most recently House of the Dragon, is possibly off to the galaxy far, far away…again.
According to Deadline, the British actor has been tapped to play a villain alongside Mia Goth, previously reported to also be cast as a villain in the upcoming Shawn Levy-directed Starfighter. A pair of villains is nothing new to Star Wars films or shows, though, depending on the possible character dynamic, it could still be fairly different from anything yet seen.
Smith was previously involved in some capacity with The Rise of Skywalker, though to what extent and in what role remains unclear all these years later. Smith’s possible return to Star Wars has triggered a great deal of surprise and excitement online for a project that has been fast-tracked ahead of others on the Lucasfilm content slate. While Starfighter is unlikely to have links to the upcoming Dawn of the Jedi movie, Smith or Goth could factor into the development of the New Jedi Order film, with Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order ten years after Starfighter.
Starfighter is set roughly five years after The Rise of Skywalker, and will have Ryan Gosling in a leading role as a pilot character. Further details of the plot remain shrouded, but it is said he will have to take up a role protecting a young individual from the film’s villain, now surely villains, in Mia Goth, and possibly now Matt Smith as well. The film is planned to release on May 28th, 2027.
