Matthew McConaughey Has Trademarked His Famous Catchphrase, 'Alright Alright Alright'

One can literally hear Matthew McConaughey’s calming southern accent with all the charm in three little words--“alright, alright, alright.” And because this phrase and its laid-back delivery are synonymous with the actor, it makes perfect sense that his legal team has helped him trademark it. The entertainment law firm Yorn Levine represents McConaughey. The team successfully secured eight trademarks through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on his behalf. This includes both the phrase and any use of McConaughey’s likeness. These protections extend to any use of AI, without the star’s consent. Yorn Levine applied for these trademark protections in December 2023. It took two years for the approval to be granted.
Approval enables McConaughey to sue if trademark protections are violated. Current laws protect celebrities from having their likenesses misused for commercial purposes. This specific trademark broadens that protection to include misuse through artificial intelligence, even when it isn’t directly related to selling anything. The registration specifically states, “The mark consists of a man saying ‘ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT’, wherein the first syllable of the first two words is at a lower pitch than the second syllable, and the first syllable of the last word is at a higher pitch than the second syllable.”
Yorn Levine, of-counsel attorney, Jonathan Pollack explained, “In a world where we’re watching everybody scramble to figure out what to do about AI misuse, we have a tool now to stop someone in their tracks or take them to federal court.”
